An inter-agency program offering on-scene and phone assistance to people experiencing a mental health issue was a big winner at this year's NSW Health Awards.
South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) took home the award in the Excellence in the Provision of Mental Health Services category for PACER (Police, Ambulance, Clinical, Early, Response).
The St George Mental Health Service implemented PACER to incorporate specialist mental health clinicians in the response to Triple Zero emergency calls for people experiencing a mental health issue.
Oatley MP Mark Coure says it has provided an invaluable service to people at their time of need and has enabled them to manage their situations at home reducing emergency department visits.
"PACER provides true patient-centred care, reducing emergency department visits and increasing out of hospital referral capabilities," he said.
"The partnership between our local health district, ambulance and police has created tailored services for people needing assistance."
Minister for Health and Medical Research, Brad Hazzard congratulated the winners and finalists of the Awards on its 21st year,
Mr Hazzard joined with staff, clinicians and academics at the awards to pay tribute to the wide array of health professionals who work tirelessly to improve the delivery of care to patients across NSW.
"Winning projects like PACER demonstrate the depth of talent and creativity that runs through NSW Health," Mr Hazzard said.
This year's Awards saw 37 finalists competing for 12 award categories.
