The annual St George and Sutherland Medical Research Symposium has brought a select bunch of young talent to the stage once again this year.
Held on October 17 at the St.George Bank Kogarah Auditorium,the event brought more than 250 staff from the South East Sydney Local Health District together under one roof, to celebrate the achievements of postgraduate and undergraduate students.
It was an opportunity for people working in the hospitals to have time out to hear about research going on to inspire them to think about their work, improve their practice and provide better health care for patients.
Science and research prizes were presented to:
- 1st prize Clinical Research - Ms Carlie Stephens; "Burden of disease in advanced cirrhotic patients not suitable for transplant"; Hepatology, St George Hospital
- 2nd Prize Clinical Research - Dr Patricia Griffiths; "The Calibration of a Bioimpedance Assessment Device (BIA) for the Estimation of Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass in the Elderly"; Aged Care, St George Hospital
- 1st Prize Basic Science and Best Presentation by an Undergraduate Student - Ms Sanjna Kalasabail; "The Role of the Microbiota in Colorectal Cancer"; Gastroenterology, St George Hospital
- 2nd prize Basic Science - Dr Jason Behary; "Effect of the microbiota on the peripheral immune response in patients with NAFLD-associated hepatocellular carcinoma"; Gastroenterology, St George Hospital
- Best Poster - Ms Jordan Stanford; "Associations between diet quality, clinical outcomes and stool microbiota in adults undertaking haemodialysis therapy"; Visiting MRC Researcher, University Wollongong Department of Dietetics and Research.
