Ten residents in Sutherland Shire electorates have been acknowledged for the 50 years of unpaid service each has given to the community as a justice of the peace.
They are among more than 250 JPs in NSW who are celebrating their golden jubilee of service in 2018-19.
Nearly 130 attended a ceremony at NSW Parliament, where they were presented with a commemorative certificate.
Recipients, who were congratulated and thanked by MPs Mark Speakman, Eleni Petinos and Lee Evans, included
- Cronulla electorate: John Adamson, Eric Galbraith and Terry Kearns.
- Miranda electorate: Ronald Hegarty, Thomas Liver, Cheryl Morrison, William Sadler and Nicolas Stamatakos.
- Heathcote electorate: John Carlson and Ronald Heather.
JPs act as independent witnesses to documents people need for a variety of purposes.
Their main functions are to witness affidavits and statutory declarations, and they may also certify copies of original documents.
JPs provide their services on a voluntary basis.
The online register has been upgraded to make the process more efficient.
JPs specify the dates and times they are available and what languages they speak.
