A new major exhibition, Southern Swell, will open at the Hazelhurst Arts Centre Gymea on November 23 which will trace the history and popularity of surfing in Sydney's south from the 1900's through to now.
The exhibition includes contemporary and historic photographs, films, memorabilia and artworks from 18 southern artists, photographers and filmmakers.
Mayor of Sutherland Shire Council, Cr Carmelo Pesce, said surfing is a major part of our life and a major industry for southern Sydney.
"Every week thousands of people across all ages and from all over Sydney use the beach as a daily or weekly ritual," Cr Pesce said.
"The Cronulla waves were the birth place of modern surfing in Australia and I have no doubt this will be a very popular exhibition for people over the summer holiday season."
The exhibition includes a curated selection of vintage, retro and recent surfboards from the Duke to now featuring early toothpicks, surfoplanes and longboards through the evolution of shortboards from the 1960s to today.
Surfing in southern Sydney is as popular as ever with local boardrider clubs supporting the next generation of southern Sydney surfers.
The exhibition is on until February 2, 2020.
