Police are appealing for information from the public about a suspicious fire at a Taren Point factory last Thursday which caused more than $1 million worth of damage.
Fire and Rescue NSW crews raced to the scene of the fire at greeting card and giftwares business For Arts Sake in Box Road, Taren Point, after receiving triple-0 calls at 2.13pm on Thursday, November 28.
The first crews arrived at the scene at 2.20pm to find smoke billowing from a shed that was well alight at the rear of the premises.
A nearby container that housed paper and cardboard was also alight.
A dozen fire crews from Sutherland Shire, St George and Alexandria, including a specialised Hazmat unit, attended and brought the blaze under control.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said earth moving equipment had to be brought in to help completely extinguish the fire due to the amount of paper.
A number of occupants were evacuated from the building and neighbouring properties. A NSW Ambulance crew also attended but there were no injuries reported.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said the shed and container were completely destroyed while five brand new unplated cars were also damaged.
He said Fire and Rescue's K9 unit was brought in to check for accelerants.
A NSW Police Media spokesperson said detectives from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command attended the scene and Strike Force Purvine was established to investigate the fire, which caused building and contents damage thought to be in excess of $1 million.
Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage taken in the Box Road area between 1pm and 3.30pm to come forward.
For Arts Sake was established in 1985 and according to its Facebook page, is the largest Australian-owned greeting card and gift wholesaler, supplying greeting cards, stationery, books, impulse lines and gifts.
Anyone with information about the fire should contact Sutherland Police on 9542 0899 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
