A Sutherland Shire-based group is inviting the community to come along to a sewing circle and knitting day to make items for wildlife injured in the catastrophic bushfires.
Wildlife Emergency Response, Sutherland Shire and Beyond will hold the first of three planned sewing and knitting days this Sunday at Miranda from 10am to 4pm to make items to aid the recovery of injured wildlife.
The group's spokeswoman Leesa Pratt said it was one of at least three planned community events to support licenced wildlife carers across NSW who are struggling to help the thousands of injured wildlife pouring into shelters.
"Our vision [is] to provide much-needed support and supplies to help rehabilitate injured, rescued, displaced and orphaned native wildlife, and to provide hope and remind carers they aren't on their own," Ms Pratt said.
"Sadly, it will be a lengthy process of recovery and we will need as many resources as we can.
"These events are an opportunity for our community to come together and respond to trauma by contributing positively, learning how to make the items needed and in turn, help teach others how to do it."
Volunteers have already begun gathering donated items to sew and knit wildlife pouches, wraps and nests, which will then be sent to 17 licenced rescue groups and their volunteers to aid the recovery of injured animals.
Ms Pratt said those attending the event are asked to bring along their own sewing machines or knitting needles if possible. If you don't know how to sew or knit you can come along and learn, or help cut up towels and other material.
Donations of old cotton and flannelette sheets, towels, woollen blankets and yarns of wool are also sought.
