Georges River Council will write to Transport for NSW (formerly Roads and Maritime Services) requesting them to create a school safety zone around the Hurstville education precinct.
Last September a 12-year-old Sydney Technical High School student was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking outside Hurstville Public School.
Following the accident, principals, head teachers and parents from Hurstville Public, Hurstville Boys High, Sydney Technical College, Bethany College Hurstville and St Mary's Star of the Sea school called for a school safety zone with a 40km/h zone throughout the precinct with improved flashing signage, road markings and traffic calming measures outside all local schools.
The council will request a review of the existing school zones on Forest Road, Hurstville near Croydon Road with a view to combining existing zones to create a safety precinct.
Following a Notice of Motion put forward by Councillor Warren Tegg, the council agreed to support Transport for NSW in its implementation of any improved pedestrian of safety measures in the vicinity it made deem necessary.
Kogarah MP Chris Minns is also pushing for a school safety zone.
