ANSTO has awarded the first five Industry Foundations Scholarships under its newly created Graduate Institute.
Graduate Institute director Professor Andrew Peele said the five scholarship recipients would have access to the expertise and technology needed to facilitate cutting-edge discoveries in advanced areas of manufacturing, health and the environment.
The Graduate Institute is part of ANSTO's Innovation Precinct and aims to create a network of Australia's brightest young minds focused on the future.
"Our science and technology industries need the inquisitive; the innovative; the ingenious to shape the best tomorrow for us and our planet. That's why we're pleased to welcome our first cohort of Industry Foundations Scholarships recipients to the ANSTO Graduate Institute," Professor Peele said.
"The Institute will see Australia's emerging scientific minds working under guidance of some of Australia's leading scientists, whilst having access to ANSTO's national industry partners and leading infrastructure."
The scholarships were funded by the state government.
NSW Minister for Innovation Kevin Anderson said the scholarships would boost industry by identifying the next generation of smart, talented and skilled employees.
"This world-class precinct for graduate students will become the training ground for the next generation of industry leading scientists and engineers - in NSW and beyond," he said.
"These graduates will one day be the minds behind Australia's vital medical treatments and innovations."
The six successful recipients will spend at least six months at an ANSTO facility.
Amy MacIntosh is one of the recipients and will spend her time at ANSTO working on a project to develop an ecological framework for closure of offshore petroleum structures to create a more sustainable environment.
"I'm very excited to have the opportunity to learn new skills from ANSTO's very experienced staff and mentors, whilst building my overall knowledge and experience," she said.
