Two days after a woman suffered fatal stab wounds at a house on the Kingsway at Woolooware, police are still guarding the cordoned-off property, as a 16-year-old boy charged with her murder remains in custody.
The boy, who was due to start year 12 the same day at a local high school, was charged following the incident in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Emergency services were called to the brick home at 1.30am, following reports a woman had been stabbed.
Police from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command arrived at the scene to find a woman, 42, with multiple stab wounds to her back.
She was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to St George Hospital in a critical condition, but died a short time later.
Officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command established a crime scene and started an investigation.
Shortly after, investigators arrested the boy, who has been identified as the woman's stepson, and he was taken to Sutherland police station where he was charged with murder.
He was refused bail and appeared later that day in Sutherland Children's Court, where he was supported by a woman believed to be his mother.
Bail was formally refused and he remains in custody.
He is due to appear in a children's court again on Wednesday, March 25, unless an application for bail is made before then.
Detective Inspector Andrea Panozzo said the premises remained under guard but could be released as early as today, once police had wrapped up their investigations at the scene.
He said he was unable to say who, if anyone else, was at the home when the incident occurred.
Police and forensic experts have been at the scene since Wednesday gathering evidence.
Today, floral tributes for the victim could be seen at the front gate of the home.
A next-door neighbour told the Leader today the incident had been "very upsetting".
She said she did not know the family well, but would say hello to the woman and her partner. She said she had never spoken to the boy who was charged with his stepmother's murder.
Another neighbour told the Sydney Morning Herald she heard screaming that lasted 20 to 30 seconds in the early hours of Wednesday morning as if someone was in "a lot of pain".
