One of the greatest sporting clubs in Australia, St George Cycling Club is celebrating its centenary March 6 and 7.
The club has had a representative in every Olympic and Commonwealth Games team since 1956 with Australia's first Olympic champion Edgar 'Dunc' Gray using Hurstville Oval in preparation for the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics.
Much of the success has been attributed to good administration, coaching and the facilities provided by, Hurstville Council (now Georges River )
Hurstville Oval has been the cornerstone of the success with Oatley Park used for road racing since 1950.
The club has produced many cyclists who have claimed World honours at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games or World Championships. In 1956 it was the St George team with coach Joe Buckley that rode for Australia.
The late Dick Paris, Gary Sutton and Kevin Nichols were stars, winning Commonwealth Games gold medals a World title and Olympic gold in 1984.
World champion Martin Vinnicombe and Brett Dutton won medals with Vinnicombe, Clayton Stevenson, Kathleen Bazzano and Julie Speight going to Seoul. Ben Kersten won gold in the 1k time trial in Melbourne.
Graeme Brown and the late Steve Wooldridge were multiple World, Commonwealth and Olympic champions, with Ashlee Ankudinoff and Kaarle McCulloch on top of the world and both set to race in Tokyo.
