Saturdays Jubilee Oval block buster Sydney Derby between Sydney FC and Western Sydney was postponed due to an unplayable pitch following the extreme weather experienced in Sydney over Friday, and further torrential rain throughout Saturday.
A morning pitch inspection conducted by match officials, representatives from the FFA, Netstrata Jubilee Stadium and Sydney FC concluded the pitch unplayable and the decision was made to postpone the match.
Sydney FC Chief Executive Officer Danny Townsend said: "Obviously we are disappointed to have to postpone the game, but the safety of the players is paramount and the pitch was in no state to host the game due to the amount of rain we have had.
"Credit to Georges River council and Netstrata Jubilee Stadium ground staff for their efforts to stage the match but due to the amount of overnight rain and surface water, plus the predicted downpour we just can't play the game.
Talks will take place between Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers,other stakeholders and Football Federation Australia regarding a re-arranged date for the game.
Rainy conditions at Sydney's Campbelltown Sports Stadium didn't deter the Australian Womens football team who scored a massive seven unanswered goals to win their first 2020 Olympic Qualifying Match on Friday night.
The 7-0 win is a great start to the team's 2020 campaign, but with tougher matches ahead next week,when they face Thailand on Monday, before taking on China on Thursday.
Superstar striker Sam Kerr started the game from the bench, but Caitlin Foord proved that the team has good options, smashing home a hat-trick in under 30 minutes.
Sydney FC defender Alanna Kennedy who also plays for her country said it was lucky that Australia got to host the tournament in their own backyard after the problems in China and was over the moon to be able to play a game for her country at her home town.
