Cronulla has been awash with waves this week with ex cyclone Uesi causing havoc and giving us a massive nor east swell that was actually surfable all weekend.
When it hit on Friday afternoon it was almost offshore and big 8 ft plus lefts were running down the beach. It settled down Saturday with all the known reefs on fire with the Cape the most crowded you have ever seen-there were still some solid bombs coming through right up to dark.
Since than it still hasn't dropped under 4 ft with day after day of head high waves.Tuesday was bigger then the day before and it stayed offshore until lunchtime giving weekday punters a bonus.
The forecast is for the swell to stick around from the sou-east with this mornings 4-5 ft offshore clean conditions ideal on all the beaches-I took today's pics at the land of the lefts as the swell sytill has some east in it.
Thursday its going to be bigger albeit with a moderate sou-easter blowing all day before another offshore window on Friday morning.
The swell will peak on Saturday with a 5-7 ft range predicted also with on-shores before dropping over Sunday to a 1-2 ft dribble on Monday-something for everyone!
The Elouera Boardriders Club looked set to make a big impression as the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle National Final got underway in near-perfect four-to-six foot lefthanders at Newcastle City Beach on Saturday.
2020 WSL CT surfer Connor O'Leary showed the same level of talent that won him the 2017 WSL Rookie Of The Year, smashing the lineup apart for his local Elouera Boardriders Club in the Oakley Open Men's heat.
O'Leary synced his forehand attack with the long lefts on offer in the heat, linking together a chain of powerful snaps and carves to finish the heat with an excellent 8.10 wave score and a heat win for his local club.
"That was so much fun out there," O'Leary said.
"It's not that common to get waves this good for an event, so to pick off a few lefthanders that had nice open face was an amazing feeling. This event is such a blast and you get to hang with and surf alongside your friends, but you still feel the pressure to surf your best as you're representing the club, not just yourself."
O'Leary's team then went on to smash their first round event beating Burleigh Heads,Kingscliff and Culburra setting themselves up for a big Sunday finale.
Jumping Jarvis Earle was runner up in his Woolworth's junior heat and along with O'Leary's win was a highlight but a couple of fourth places didn't help the teams overall points and in a disappointing result they got bundled out in the second round Sunday in a close fought heat with only a 7 needed for the win finishing in equal 13th .
Akemi O'Leary said they will get their revenge next year and thanked everyone for their ongoing support.
At home the Surfing Sutherland Shire Boardriders club season is back on,with this weekend Cronulla Point Boardriders hopefully kicking off their year with some waves at the Point.
The club with new President Jon Lavers on board is on the lookout for new members,so if you want to catch a few waves at the Point with only a few people out come down on Saturday morning at 6.30 am and sign up-juniors especially welcome.
Still going strong since the late 70's, Cronulla Point meet every second Saturday of the month for comps-with two days allocated due to unpredictable surfing conditions.
Morocco's Ramzi Boukhiam was victorious over Weslley Dantas (BRA) by a final score of 14.40 to 11.23 to take home the World Surf League QS5000 Oi Hang Loose Pro Contest at Cacimba do Padre in Fernando de Noronha, Brazil last weekend.
The Moroccan was consistent throughout the week and was in complete sync with the waves on Finals Day, which included a Semifinals win over former event winner Jadson Andre (BRA). With the win, Boukhiam has jumped from 163rd to number 2 on the Qualifying Series rankings behind Wiggolly Dantas (BRA), who took the rankings lead with his Semifinals finish today.
"I'm super happy with this result today," said Boukhiam. "Weslley (Dantas) and Jadson (Andre) are extremely tough competitors and great all-around surfers. So, I just tried to focus on myself and surf to my strengths and use powerful turns. It seemed like everything went my way today. I caught the best waves and took advantage of every opportunity."
A lot closer to home the Mothernest Great Lakes Pro will once again call Boomerang Beach home with over 200 surfers visiting the idyllic region today.
The elite four-day World Surf League Qualifying Series 1000 rated event will form the second of three stops on the Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series and will take place in the Great Lakes from the 19 February - 23 February 2020.
Local up and comers Jordy Turansky and Jay Brown will fly the flag for Cronulla.
Surfing NSW CEO Luke Madden believes the event will continue to amaze spectators and competitors when the competition gets underway "The Mothernest Great Lakes Pro usually scores some of the best waves we see all year for competition, which in turn, makes for some incredible surfing. We can't wait to see what happens when it kicks off," Madden said.
