They may be a familiar sight saving lives in the surf, but local lifeguards recently took a break from the beach to meet patients at Sydney Children's Hospital.
Joining fellow lifeguards from Waverley and Randwick Council, Sutherland Shire lifeguards visited ahead of this Sunday's Bondi to Cronulla Lifeguard Challenge, which sees lifeguards from all three councils join forces to raise funds for much needed medical equipment.
Led by Sutherland Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Carmelo Pesce, local lifeguards Lara Hughes, Mitch Kenyon and mascot 'Sonny' met with Grays Point's Zane West who has been diagnosed with a highly aggressive and difficult to treat brain tumour.
Mayor Pesce said participants in the lifeguard challenge do exceptional work to not only conquer the 30km course but also raise funds for lifesaving medical equipment.
"It was a pleasure to meet with Zane West and his parents Steve and Min, with Steve speaking passionately about the incredible care his son has received while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
"We all know the fantastic work that staff at the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick do in providing expert medical care to sick kids from across the state, including many from the Sutherland Shire," Mayor Pesce said.
"I'm proud of the work our local lifeguards have been doing in leading fundraising efforts for this worthy cause, so I'm urging everyone to get behind them and make a donation at the finish line this Sunday or through the fundraising page."
The challenge is set to take off from Sydney's iconic Bondi Beach at 6:30am on Sunday 15 March and residents are encouraged to turn out in force to support them at a finish line BBQ event from 10:30am at Cronulla Beach.
Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation Community Partnerships Manager, Clare Sayer offered thanks to those lifeguards set to take part in the challenge, saying that their fundraising efforts were making a positive difference in the lives of young patients.
