An appeal by pensioners John and Rosemary Willis for someone to mow the median strip outside their home on Port Hacking Road, Miranda has finally been actioned by Transport for NSW.
Mr and Mrs Willis both use mobility scooters and are too worried to attempt crossing Port Hacking Road outside their home because unmown grass on the median strip obscures their view of oncoming traffic.
Mr Willis said at its worst the grass can get to 1.5 metres high causing a danger to motorists as well as pedestrians.
"The median strip was finally mowed in the early hours last night," Mr Willis said.
"We heard a noise about 2am and when I got up at 8am I saw there was no high grass anymore."
While happy with the result, Mr Willis said it is only a temporary solution.
He has been lobbying the government at local and state level for the past ten years to concrete the median strip.
"I contact the RMS (now Transport for NSW) a couple of times a year and they come out and mow the grass on the median strip," he said.
"The last time they did it was last year. But it has cropped up again and a friend of ours had a near miss the other day turning right into Junction Street when she was coming to visit us.
"People sitting in low cars have their view obscured by the grass when it gets too high.
"It has taken eight weeks since my latest request," he said. "If they had concreted the strip it would have solved the problem for good.
"It's not a permanent fix but for the moment it is safe."
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said significant rainfall in February has seen an increase in vegetation growth.
"Transport for NSW is working hard to ensure all maintenance work is carried out as quickly as possible," the spokesperson said.
"The safety of all road users is a priority and Transport for NSW has a regular maintenance program of mowing and vegetation control along state roads."
