Cronulla surfers have had a week like no other as an East Coast Low sat off the NSW South Coast for a few days sending us pumping big offshore surf before hitting us with its usual onshore onslaught.
Friday into Saturday was as good and as big as it gets on our beaches-8-10 ft if you were keen to paddle north into the maelstrom- and there were a few surfers who cracked out their big boards and did, Blake Johnston and Kalani Vandepolder amongst them.
Cronulla Point also turned on as the low moved slowly north before the howling southerly made it tough to surf anywhere not protected.
The good news is today's surfing conditions are as good as it will get this week, with some nice solid waves around 4-6ft still on offer and the wind swinging around as the day goes on and the tide comes in.
There is so much sand dragged off the beach and dumped out the back after the big seas that at low tide there is a closeout line from Wanda to the Alley that will only improve with the incoming tide.
These offshore's will hang around all week for the start of winter although the swell wont co-operate and will drop and sit around the 2-3 ft mark moving into the start of next week-but overall, something for everyone!
In a boost for surfing, outdoor sport activities and outdoor community sport can now recommence (including Boardriders Club competitions) as long as it is in line with the public health orders in a COVID safe manner.
However, there are some limitations and guidelines that need to be adhered to and Surfing NSW CEO Luke Madden and Sutherland Shire Surfing President Andy Britton met with Sutherland Council Beach Manager Brett Richardson to work out the logistics.
Boardriders Clubs need to reconnect with the Council to gain approval prior to resuming the 2020 season where physical distancing (1.5m) must be followed at all times and only ten people can gather at one time on the beach.
Each club should create a schedule online that allows members to "arrive, surf and leave" with no spectators and competitors must provide their own sunscreen, wax and equipment with rash shirts washed in disinfectant.
Cronulla Sharks Boardriders will recommence on Saturday June 06 .
The thirty-sixth Australian Surfing Awards Incorporating The Hall of Fame went to air on Sunday, May 24th on Channel 9 in an exciting new digital format due to the Covid restrictions, which allowed us to still celebrate the amazing achievements of our nominees and winners from the comfort of our living rooms.
The best of the best over the past twelve months across thirteen award categories were honored, with the announcement of Jodie Cooper as the latest Hall of Fame inductee.
The super-powerful natural-foot was a stylish, dangerous presence throughout the 80's and the first part of the 90's on the then-ASP World Tour, dominating Hawaiian events with deep carving turns and great big-surf instincts.
She rekindled the North Shore as the performance pinnacle for women pros with a breakthrough win at Haleiwa in 1985, followed by repeated wins at Sunset Beach, and finally a two-year domination of Hawaiian events in 1992 and '93.
In recent years, Cooper has been part of the coaching staff for the Australian Junior Team contesting the ISA World Junior Championships and has been active as a commentator on various surfing events.
