Philanthropy may be an old-fashioned word and an even more old-fashioned concept, but it has never been more important than right now.
I am proud of the large number of people in the St George area who are motivated by a desire to serve others and who give of their time and money to help those in need.
While the COVID-19 crisis begins to come under control and restrictions are eased, I would like to pay tribute to the local heroes that provided care and support to people in our community as they faced their darkest hour.
The Salvation Army was there for people hit hard by the crisis. For some it was help with financial hardship, for others it was the need to find safety from domestic violence. Right now the Salvos are conducting their 'Red Shield Appeal" and I encourage everyone to get online and donate.
The Kingsgrove Community Aid Centre has been looking out for the people of St George for more than 50 years. During this crisis they have played an important role looking after many seniors who found themselves alone, isolated and frightened. Just knowing that someone in the community cared was enough to cheer up many of our older citizens.
Then there are the many community organisations that teach languages, art, music or martial arts. Each adapted to the challenge and provided lessons online so our young people could keep developing these important life skills and stay connected with their friends.
There are many other community organisations that provided food, clothing, medicines, transport or other essentials throughout the depths of the crisis.
The roots of these organisations are often in the faiths and cultures that make up the St George community. As Mahatma Gandhi said "Gentleness, self-sacrifice and generosity are the exclusive possession of no one race or religion."
To all our local heroes, thank you.
