Disgraced former NSW Labor minister Milton Orkopoulos paid a boy as young as 11 years old for sex, a court has heard.
Court documents reveal the boy was aged between 11 and 12 when Orkopoulos allegedly had sex with him in December 1998.
Orkopoulos, who appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday via audio-visual link from Sydney's Long Bay prison, also allegedly indecently assaulted another boy aged 11 to 12 between 1994 and 1995.
Defence lawyer Omar Juweinat told the court Orkopoulos had been housed since Monday's arrest on fresh charges in the prison's maximum security area.
He was already behind bars in Sydney over an alleged breach of parole conditions following his December 2019 prison release. He had spent 11-and-a-half years in jail after being convicted of 30 child sex, child porn and drug offences between 1995 and 2006.
Magistrate John Chicken on Tuesday adjourned the case to August 20 and ordered authorities to assess Orkopoulos for mental health issues.
The 62-year-old, wearing glasses and prison greens, said nothing during the brief hearing and did not apply for bail.
Police allege Orkopoulos sexually and indecently assaulted the two boys on separate occasions in Lake Macquarie and on the NSW mid-north coast.
Orkopoulos has also been charged with causing a child under 14 to participate in child prostitution and with committing an act of indecency.
Court documents show he allegedly "engaged in sexual activities with (the boy) for money" on two occasions and "engaged in sexual intercourse for payment" on another.
After his December 2019 release from prison, the ex-NSW Aboriginal affairs minister was arrested in January for allegedly setting up an Instagram account and not telling police within the required seven days.
He had his parole revoked in February after Corrective Services NSW officers told police he used the mobile phone of a fellow resident at the Malabar halfway house where he lived.
