G'day readers,
Often in journalism, we shine a light on things that some people want to keep in the dark. Less often do we shine a light on good things, as an editor that's something I have encouraged my team to do more. Our readers tell us they like a mixture of good news and hard news.
One good piece of policy that we've recently covered is the proposed re-establishment of public wharves at La Perouse and the Kurnell Peninsula.
I spoke with Mark Speakman MP this week and he tells me the project would be great for tourism. I'd have to agree.
A passenger ferry service between the at La Perouse and the Kurnell Peninsula localities out across the heads of the bay had previously operated until 1974 when it ceased following a storm that severely damaged the infrastructure.
When we have international tourists back on our shores, how good would it be to give them a similar experience to that of the first British explorers? For that matter, I am sure Aussie tourists would love it too.
It would be a build it and they would come scenario, if the wharves were built, I am sure private ferry companies would use them and a few viable businesses would spring up in the Sydney tourism sector.
It is a good idea and should be applauded.
On the news front this week Jim Gainsford told you a new after-hours GP service has opened in Kogarah that is free for children under 16. This is good news. As During COVID-19, many parents have been concerned about taking their children to emergency wards within hospitals because they fear contracting the virus.
Jim also reported the Georges River Council would be asked to scrap a plan to abolish its Voluntary Pensioner Rates Rebate. Some pensioners are doing it hard financially, so this would also be a policy that would be welcomed by many.
Our Merryn Porter went elbow deep into a whole lot of statistics and reported that drinking alcohol and lifestyle choices are under the spotlight during Men's health week. Her report shocked me. I am 50 and not as fit as I once was so some of the stats she outlined in her yarn gave me a few 'wow' moments.
Murray reported this week households would have extra incentive to take shorter showers and cut water use in other ways when a new pricing structure starts on July 1. Would you shower with a friend to save water?
