Georges River Council has resolved to improve pedestrian safety in relation to bicycle delivery drivers following a rapid increase in food delivery cyclists occupying footpaths within local shopping precincts.
At its June meeting, the council voted to seek support on the issue from Oatley MP, Mark Coure, Minister for Transport Andrew Constance, Kogarah MP Chris Minns, Rockdale MP Steve Kamper and Lakemba MP Jihad Dib and Member for Rockdale, Mr Steve Kamper.
The council will request a review of the NSW road rules, insurance, registrations and bicycle penalties, to specifically address the safety issues for local residents.
Additional support will be sought from the NSW Police St George Local Area Command with regards to food delivery cyclists in local shopping precincts.
The establishment of a designated parking area for food delivery cyclists in local town centres will also be investigated, and findings of the investigation will be reported to the Local Traffic Advisory Committee.
The council will also address the issue by incorporating a safety campaign, targeted at delivery drivers, into its annual Road Safety Program.
