In a welcome relief to all ,restrictions on community sport have now been lifted by the NSW Government and Junior and senior community sporting competitions, training and contact activities have resumed.
Clubs are reminded not to drop the ball yet, with organisations needing to comply with the current Public Health Orders and practice physical distancing when not playing.
Local Cronulla MP and Attorney General Mark Speakman who attended the Sutherland Shire Football Association kick off at Solander fields on Saturday morning said it was great to see community sport back on the weekend.
"This reinstates a key part of many Shire residents' weekly routine. It brings physical health, mental health, social and even character building benefits for all who participate and support it - and it's a lot of fun." Mr Speakman said
The Sutherland Shire Football Association is the largest football Association of any code in Australia and 1500 teams and took advantage of being able to get back on the park playing 750 games on 60 local grounds.
There were many milestones celebrated with Greg Brosens beginning his 50th Season not just playing football but playing consecutively for the Engadine Eagles club.
While he's played for all those seasons he's also been on the committee for over 20 years and in many of those years he was also on the Executive and has been a key liaison officer with the Sutherland Association
Peter Liddy also played the first match of his 50th Season for Lilli Pilli and the Georges River Tigers are celebrating their 60 th year on the park .
In the water Cronulla Boardriders Club held the first official surfing event since Covid restrictions began and even though the waves were tiny the grommets didnt complain too loudly - the Southside Malibu club are up next weekend.
In the Cronulla Sutherland Junior Rugby League, clubs are back in full training and will have 10 competition rounds starting on July 18, with the last competition round on the weekend of September 19/20.
Sutherland Netball is also back on court July 18 and are playing a seven round series before finals.
