The St George Netball association competition is up and running after a COVID enforced delay and they are halfway through their abbreviated season.
Secretary Lara Mina said its great to have Netball back and this year's competition would be 10 rounds with two final weekends.
"We lost a few teams, but all the players were shared around other clubs so everyone could get a game."
"The competition was challenging to get up and running-but we passed all the NSW Health compliance checks and restrictions are in place, so everyone is safe," Mina said
"It's a big year because we are looking forward to our long-awaited court upgrades at the end of the season."
St George Netball was born in 1947 when Mr and Mrs Dewhurst, who were both patrons of the Scarborough Park National Fitness Set organised games of basketball for both men and women of the District.
In 1978 the West Botany St. Rockdale Netball complex officially opened and in 1981 they opened the sealed netball courts and Control Room at their current site.
The St George Netball Association is made up of 11 local member clubs with Association Rep teams also playing weekend games.
This month Federal Member for Banks David Coleman MP met the Executive Committee at the St George courts to discuss the upgrades.
At this meeting, David announced the Federal Government would be providing $1M to enable this important project to proceed.
"For too long, St. George District Netball Association has needed court upgrades at Rockdale. I've been working on this issue for some time and it was good to announce that the Federal Government will be providing $1M to enable this important project to go ahead."David Coleman said
Work on the courts is due to start in September 2020 and is expected to finish in February 2021.
St George also competes in the top level of the NSW Metro League and after three rounds of competition, they have won two from their three games and are sitting in fifth position.
The Dooleys Metro League is one of the premier netball competitions in New South Wales, offering week in, week out competition for the state's most talented netballers, coaches, umpires and administrators.
Sixty teams contest the Dooleys Metro League, and are divided into six divisions of 10 teams-the Sutherland Association plays in level two.
In 2020 the Metro League is held three nights a week with teams playing nine rounds plus a final series for teams finishing in 1 - 4 of each division.
