It was touted as the clash between two unbeaten Sydney Rugby sides and after the mud dried there was only one winner, competition favourites Randwick. They put on an attacking performance running over the Rebels 34-5 at a blustery Forshaw Rugby Park on Saturday.
The Sir Roden Cutler Shield is now off to Coogee Oval after South's home loss.
Randwick is now on top of the Shute Shield with 28 points followed by Sydney University and Gordon with Southern Districts and Eastwood equal on 20 points.
If the Rebels want to stay in touch with the ladder leaders, they have to win next week's game against Warringah who sit just below them.
It was back to Port Hacking Day at Sylvania, a day which honours the blue half of the team formed by the amalgamation of the St George and Port Hacking clubs.
It was also a day where former Hackers player Paul Sinclair was honoured.
Sinclair passed away earlier this year aged 59 after a long battle with cancer and was a true Rugby man. A speedy winger he won three premierships with the club scoring a try in each game.
On Saturday the first points went to the Galloping Greens when the Australian national seven's team member Maurice Longbottom ran from one side of the field to the other to put his opposite winger over in the corner.
Longbottom also scored one from the kickoff, leaving the score at 22-0 his ankle-breaking sidestep having been seen on the world sevens circuit for years with plenty of interest to see how he transitions to XVs.
Souths also were hit by an injury avalanche with half Sam Harris limping off after five minutes, three other players joining him.
Randwick had all the possession and the swirling wind gusts made it hard for Southern kickers to find touch, but the Rebels stuck to their attacking guns and sat on Randwick's line. The Rebels took the ball up for 10 minutes until Joe Cotton cracked their defence for the only points on the day.
You cant win a game of football without the ball and as Southerns injury bench grew the hope of an upset diminished. There was a lot to like in the losing team and hopefully by the time they get back to Forshaw on September 5 they have regained their winning ways.
