Menai Discount Drug Stores is offering free diabetes risk assessment screenings throughout September in a bid to uncover undiagnosed cases of the disease.
According to Diabetes Australia, about 1.8 million Australians have diabetes, but up to 500,000 of those cases are undiagnosed.
A further two million Australians are thought to be at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Discount Drug Stores (DDS) is now working to uncover the often silent condition by offering free comprehensive consultations to eligible customers during September.
The one-on-one sessions take about 15 minutes and include a finger-prick blood glucose test and blood pressure reading to screen for a range of diabetes-related risk factors.
The pharmacist can also give advice about the potential risk of developing type 2 diabetes, review medication and lifestyle factors, or provide a GP referral if needed.
The screenings not only provide early detection but can improve the management of diabetes, and minimise the risk of potential complications developing.
About 280 Australians are diagnosed with diabetes every day - that is one person every five minutes.
Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition and is associated with lifestyle factors, including poor diet, insufficient physical activity and being overweight or obese. Early detection is key to reducing the risk of complications such as heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, eye problems, and foot and nerve problems.
Managing the condition early through a healthy diet, lifestyle and sometimes medication can drastically reduce complications.
While regular health check-ups and healthier lifestyle choices can often help manage the condition, medication or insulin injections may be required.
Common warning signs for type 2 diabetes include frequent urination, increased thirst, blurry vision and chronic lethargy, which can come on suddenly and often be dismissed as general health problems.
Anyone who has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes can also have a free check-up to ensure they are effectively managing their condition.
