The conversion of a heritage-listed 1920s church at Cronulla into "beautifully appointed coastal-luxe homes" is close to completion.
Three homes are being built in the former South Cronulla Uniting Church and Sunday School hall, with an additional four stylish townhouses alongside.
The four townhouses in the boutique development named The Abbey have just been placed on the market, with the apartments in the church and hall to follow.
Expressions of interest are being fielded for the first four dwellings. Comparable new homes in the area have sold for prices ranging from low $2 million to $3 million.
The church, in Wilshire Avenue, near Shelly Beach, closed in 2016 despite the best efforts of parishioners. The Uniting Church amalgamated local parishes and put the property up for sale.
The development concept for the site by AJH + Architects recently won silver at the Sydney Design Awards.
Charles Daoud, a director of developer Traders in Purple, said the executive three-bedroom residences, which were due to be completed next month, featured multiple living spaces and a contemporary interior with vaulted ceilings, bespoke joinery and warm natural textures including marble, timber and stone.
"Residents can expect unmatched luxury finishes such as striking gas fireplaces surrounded by aged brass and vein cut travertine, built-in cocktail bar and elegant kitchens fitted with state-of-the art Gaggenau appliances, brush gold tapware and even a wine fridge," he said.
"Crafted with seamless indoor and outdoor flow, the pet friendly properties feature a private, beautifully landscaped courtyard with built-in BBQ facilities.
"Each home will include private double garaging and storage located within a secure basement, most with internal access. There is also a communal lift from the garage to ground level.
"Our vision was to pay legacy to the rich history of this property while creating high-end sophisticated residences that will become like private sanctums.
"The Abbey represents our commitment to the highest quality and will set a new benchmark for development delivering low maintenance luxury coastal living in South Cronulla."
The church was built at a time when the Cronulla peninsula was developing. The foundation stone is dated 18 April, 1924.
As an 'interwar church', its local heritage listing relates to its simple gabled form, roof line and finishes.
