A six-year-old girl was hit by a car when she tried to cross the road without her mother while walking home from school at Engadine on Tuesday afternoon.
The girl was taken to the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick, with non-life threatneing injuries.
A statement by Sutherland Shire Police Area Command said the accident occurred about 3.25pm when the girl was walking home from school along Kingswood Road with her mother and other children and parents.
"The child has tried to cross the road without her mother and ran into the path of an oncoming vehicle," the statement said.
"The child was struck and has sustained non-life threatening injuries.
"She has been conveyed to Randwick Children's Hospital. The driver was conveyed to Sutherland Hospital.
"The incident is being investigated by Sutherland Shire Police."
