Nominations are now open for Sutherland Shire Council's Australia Day Citizen of the Year awards.
The awards recognise the most outstanding citizen, young citizen, community group and environmental citizen.
The council hosts the awards each year to "shine a light on dedicated citizens and recognise their impact in our community".
Residents have until Friday, November 20, to nominate an exceptional person or community group they feel is deserving of the award that best suits their category.
Sutherland Shire mayor Steve Simpson said the awards provide an opportunity for residents and community groups to be acknowledged for their perseverance.
"It is time to publicly recognise those in our community whose tireless efforts behind the scenes often go unnoticed," councillor Simpson said.
"The year 2020 has exposed the harrowing challenges of bushfires, drought, wild weather and the consequences of a global pandemic, but in these immensely difficult times, many individuals and groups have shown incredible dedication in selflessly lending support where needed.
"These community awards recognise the unsung community heroes in Sutherland Shire."
The council is searching for local residents and service groups who exemplify the community spirit for which Sutherland Shire is famed, including giving generously of their time and expertise to assist others and advocate for positive change.
