Rebelettes rule the competition

The women's 'Rebelettes' 7s rugby program at the Southern Districts club started in 2018 and was born out of a group of young girls playing and training at "Live Athletic" in Taren Point.

The start of 2018 saw eight girls enrol to play at the season's start and finished the season with a squad of 21 high-level rugby players who attained a win rate of 92% throughout their matches finishing second in the overall standing of the Sydney competition.

Coaching Director Chris Nay has run the squad for three years and since 2019 has a first and development team of girls who had originally come from an array of sporting backgrounds (Touch Football, CrossFit, Basketball, Surf Club and Soccer)

2020 has been a long season for the Rebelettes, dominating over summer and winning private competitions at the Blue Mountains, Mudgee, Scone, Hamilton and Kiama into then an extended Covid season.

Going into this final competition at home, both teams were on top of their respective tables with the first-grade girls already having enough points for the Premiership.

In the Development Jack Scott Cup final, the young red white and blue local girls had everything to play for-but so did their University opposition who sat on equal points.

In an amazing must -win and free-flowing game both teams scored three unconverted tries, with Southern coming from behind to score on the death leaving it a 15 all draw and a first shared Premiership title.

First grade played a tough Randwick team who scored first but back to back South tries put them in front, including a cracker from the kick-off when they stripped the ball and put it down under the posts in under 20 seconds.

Another runaway try made it two tries to three and finished their season on top.

Captain Brittney Vanderhart said it was a tough year and everybody put it to them.

"Thanks to our coaches and managers, they are great human beings. This squad is full of unbelievable people and to take out first and second division is history-making," she said holding the Cup aloft.

Coach Chris Nay had spoken about resilience all year.

"It was our ability to stick to the plan that paid off," he said

The Southern Districts Rugby Club will continue to invest in a successful women's program which is pivotal for the future of high-level Women's Rugby in the St George and Sutherland area.
