They say records are meant to be broken and Sutherland Little A's are still doing just that.
The Sutherland Little Athletics Club was first run on November 21, 1970, making this their 50th Season.
The Little Athletics program takes place from September to March on Saturday Mornings for children aged 4 to 16 years to participate in a range of track and field events.
The Little A's aim is to encourage and support all of their athletes to have fun, make friends and to achieve their own Personal Best. They are encouraged to participate positively and enthusiastically regardless of their athletic ability.
Sutherland President Elizabeth Lee said the club is run selflessly by a great 20 member committee.
"Sutherland prides itself on inclusiveness for all families-we strive for excellence but its really for everyone of all abilities," she said on Saturday morning overlooking hundreds of children taking part at their Waratah Park grass track.
"We want everyone to strive to be their best."
To celebrate in the year of COVID is hard but on the birthday date there will be a Sutherland Gift Handicap race and a just-announced 'Colour Run'.
The Sutherland Club Champion and record board is sprinkled with great names from the past, Diane Holden, Clinton Barter, Joel Reddy, Trent Wood, Sonja Wennekes, Glenn Cuthill, the Geddes family and Ella Nelson amongst them.
On Saturday it was multiple 100-metre record holder Emma Lee who broke the latest U17 200 record running a hot 25.89 on grass.
Lee who had broken the 100-metre record last week, besting Luisa Healy's time who had previously beaten Ella Nelson's record and 2019 Australian 400 meters age champ Jessica Wardrobe went shoulder to shoulder around the bend until Lee broke away.
Lee and Wardrobe said Little A's is all about having fun and being with your friends.
"It teaches you resilience and confidence, winning and losing, you have to talk and interact with competitors, parents and coaches."
It also teaches the value of hard work and how to set and accomplish goals-50 years proves that.
