Update
A woman found dead in the driveway of a Como unit block had an apprehended violence order (AVO) in place against a man who was later arrested, police say.
The victim has been named as Lynda Greenwood, 39, who was described by a neighbour as "a lovely, quiet young woman" and by another as someone who "always smiled, always waved".
The man, who was arrested by police at his Sylvania home, was under supervision of the Parole Board in relation to offences committed against the woman, Detective Superintendent Jason Box said.
Mr Box, who is Sutherland Shire Police Area Commander, said the couple, both aged, 39, had been in an "on-off" relationship for two years and there were domestic violence incidents reported in 2019.
Mr Box said an AVO had been taken out against the man was due to expire in 2021.
"My understanding is that the man was on a corrective services order, which is managed by the Parole Board where they supervise him up to 2021, in relation to offences committed against the woman," he said.
Mr Box said neighbours found the woman with severe injuries in the driveway of the Cremona Road units about 12.30am on Tuesday.
"Despite the efforts of neighbours, she was not able to be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene due to extensive wounds to her upper body," he said.
"At the same time, witnesses observed a male known to the deceased leaving this location," he said.
"This 39-year-old male was arrested approximately two hours ago at Sylvania and he is in custody at Sutherland Police Station assisting police with inquiries."
Mr Box said the circumstances around the death of the woman were still being investigated.
He was unable to say how the injuries were inflicted and said no weapon had been found.
Evidence suggested the attack had occurred on the driveway.
Mr Box said there was nothing to suggest she had barricaded herself in the unit or had been running away.
"I believe there were a number of flatmates present," he said.
Mr Box said police had located the man from their records of his residence.
Mr Box said he did not think the AVO process had failed.
"I wouldn't say there is a failure in respect of the orders," he said.
"The orders are in place to protect a person and the onus is on the parties involved to report breaches."
