Schools in St George and Sutherland Shire are being urged to sign up for the first ever online science fair hosted by ANSTO.
Australia's Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation is calling on school students in years 3 to 6 to take part in the event, which is part of ANSTO's ongoing efforts to provide educational opportunities in a COVID-Safe way.
Participating students will carry out their very own science investigation - just like the scientists at ANSTO.
ANSTO scientists and experts will then review the entries, which must include a short video explaining why they chose their experiment, what they learned and how it works.
ANSTO's Discovery Centre leader Rod Dowler said the online science fair was an exciting new way for students to enhance their learning and analytical skills.
"The ANSTO science fair is COVID-19 inspired in terms of its remoteness, but it is still an educational, thought-provoking and entertaining activity for all students," Mr Dowler said.
"This is the first time we are putting on a fair like this [and] it is an excellent way of showing kids the many fun and exciting avenues to be explored in STEM subjects.
"I encourage all schools in the St George and Sutherland Shire area to sign up and get involved.
"Our ANSTO scientists will look at the students' work through an expert lens and provide tailored feedback. Students will have the opportunity to ask ANSTO scientists questions, helping them conceptualise how classroom work at school can be applied to real life - something our scientists do every day."
Prizes include an ANSTO school incursion worth more than $500.
Participating classes will be given an exclusive webinar presentation by two ANSTO scientists outlining what they do each day and how they apply scientific concepts to their work.
Submissions must fall under one of the following categories: Living World, Material World, Physical World, Earth and Space and Digital Technologies. Each aligns with the NSW science and technology K-6 syllabus.
Registrations close October 30. Entries must be received by November 20.
