The Sydney Airport precinct road upgrades, started in 2016, have now been completed.
A Transport for NSW Spokesperson said Sydney Airport and Port Botany are two of the most important international gateways, facilitating the movement of millions of people and goods around the country each year.
"Passengers to the airport combined with freight movements to and from Port Botany caused significant congestion, costing the city over six billion dollar every year," the spokesperson said.
"To address this issue, Transport for NSW identified three key precincts to upgrade to improve travel times and ultimately reduce congestion for all road users."
The most recent upgrade of Airport North involved widening O'Riordan Street to three lanes in each direction from Bourke Road to Robey Street at Mascot to increase road capacity and accommodate upgrades to Sydney Airport's internal road network.
Prior to this, the Airport East precinct upgrade was carried out to improve rail freight movements to and from Port Botany, and traffic flow and access to Sydney Airport, Mascot and the eastern suburbs by replacing the rail level crossing on General Holmes Drive with a road underpass.
It also involved widening Joyce Drive and General Holmes Drive between O'Rioirdan Street and Mill Pond Road to three lanes in each direction and creating a shared path to link to the existing cycle way on Wentworth Avenue to improve connections for active transport users.
Preceding Airport East was the upgrade of the Airport West precinct, in which Marsh Street at Arncliffe - the primary connection to Sydney Airport's international terminals - was widened to three lanes in each direction between the Giovanni Brunetti Bridge and the M5 interchange.
Upgrades to the airport precinct also involved improvements to five key intersections at Mascot to help manage congestion and safety, and help address growing freight and travel demands in one of Sydney's most diversely used areas. This program of work was recently completed this month.
The spokesperson said the airport precinct upgrades will help ensure we meet current and future road, freight and active transport needs in and around Sydney Airport and Port Botany.
"The completion of the Airport North precinct upgrade this month marks the culmination of a robust suite of upgrades carried out by Transport for NSW over a busy four year period on behalf of the NSW and Australian governments."
