A total of 102 individuals, community groups and businesses have been honoured in the 2020 St George Community Awards.
Now in their tenth year, the St George Community Awards acknowledges and thanks the many volunteers and organisations that strive to make the local community a better place to live
The awards have been presented since November 4 by Oatley MP Mark Coure in order to uphold the COVID advice promoted by NSW Health with recipients meeting in small groups throughout the community while maintaining social distancing requirements.
"Volunteering and looking out for those in need is so important and this has been crucial given the year we have had with drought, bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic," Mr Coure said.
"Considering the difficult year our community has had with the recent pandemic, I decided to venture out into the community to assess how the pandemic has affected their work and how they have overcome these challenges to give back to those in need," Mr Coure said.
The award categories include Individual Volunteer Achievement Award, Youth Achievement Award, Senior Volunteer Achievement Award, Community Group Award, Sports Achievement Award, Business Achievement Award and Environmental Achievement Award.
"I wish these recipients all the best for the year ahead as we move through these difficult times and I look forward to a time where we can once again host everyone together for an awards night that signifies the community spirit here in the St George area," Mr Coure said.
Recipients include lifelong volunteers like Joan Vaughan and Dorothy Dixon from the Mulga Road Bookshop, community groups like SHARE SMR and local businesses like Club Rivers and Kogarah Indian Bazaar.
