With high temperatures predicted for the weekend and many expected to head to Cronulla's beaches to cool off, Sutherland Shire Council is asking beachgoers to remember to practice social distancing and not crowd beaches, or risk being sent home.
Sutherland Shire lifeguards are working with local authorities to manage crowd numbers ahead of a predicted weekend heatwave.
With COVID Safe measures still in place which restrict the capacity of local beaches and public spaces, Sutherland Shire mayor Steve Simpson said it was vital that residents and visitors planned ahead to avoid peak times at Cronulla beaches.
"We know residents and visitors will be eager to make the most of warm weather by heading to our local beaches and outdoor open spaces, but we are urging everyone to plan carefully and not become complacent to ensure we can maintain social distancing," councillor Simpson said.
"It's a team effort from all of us to combat the threat of COVID-19 community transmission and there are plenty of ways to continue enjoying our natural surrounds in a COVID Safe manner."
Council's lifeguards will not just be responsible for maintaining beach safety this year, but also monitoring social distancing and visitor numbers across local beaches, alongside NSW Police.
"We are seeking commitment from all beachgoers to respect public health directives and our lifeguards, who are working hard to ensure our coastline remains accessible to all," councillor Simpson said.
"The responsibility is on all of us to be aware of guidelines and consider alternative plans so that we can all contribute to the safety of the wider community."
The council has already had to close beaches this season after they became too crowded during the October long weekend.
Sutherland Shire Council's public safety and lifeguards unit made the decision in conjunction with police at about 2pm on Monday, October 3, after too many people packed beaches.
The council said that before visiting local beaches, parks or other popular public spaces they should:
- Check for latest updates on beach capacity before leaving home via its Facebook page or website, sutherlandshire.nsw.gov.au.
- Avoid crowds - plan visits outside of peak times.
- Follow directions from on-site signage, council lifeguards and NSW Police.
- Be aware that beaches and car parks will be closed if they reach capacity.
