Police from the St George Local Area Command will provide a greater presence at Brighton and the Botany Bay foreshore parks and carparks over the summer months.
The police have committed to additional patrols and blitzes and will work closely with the Marine Command and the EPA to curb anti-social and dangerous behaviours on the foreshore and on the water.
The commitment came after Bayside Councillors and Police met at Rockdale Town Hall yesterday to discuss anti-car hooning strategies.
The additional police will be on foot and in vehicles, with a focus on speeding, hooning, dangerous driving, and unnecessary noise in beachside hotspots from Kyeemagh to Sans Souci.
Additionally, Bayside Council and the community are calling on the Minister for Transport and Roads, Andrew Constance to:
. Install a speed camera on Bay Street between Moate Ave and the Grand Parade where vehicles routinely exceed the 40km limit;
. Resurface the road pavement on Bay Street between Moate Ave and the Grand Parade with a rumbled or textured surface to signal to drivers that this is a high pedestrian area;
. Facilitate the temporary road closure of Bay Street over summer weekends.
Council will review the coverage provided by its CCTV cameras, update if necessary and share the imagery collected by the cameras with local police.
These images may be used as evidence against those committing offences.
Both the police and Council will publicise the number of penalties issued in the foreshore area on a regular basis.
Bayside Council has:
1. Contracted the use of off duty police officers over the summer months to assist our rangers and parking officers to ensure visitors to our beach and parks are compliant and act safely.
2. Employed a number of customer service ambassadors to provide advice and education to park and beach users.
3. A program to trim back trees where speed and safety signs are being obstructed.
Other comments and suggestions
1. The police take a zero tolerance approach towards all offenders and issue fines.
2. Greater CCTV coverage be installed at hotspots.
3. The police assistance line Ph 131444 be used to report incidents of anti-social behaviour to police.
4. That the cancellation of NYE fireworks be promoted to avoid people travelling to Brighton unnecessarily.
5. That a pop up police station be considered for Brighton in one of the vacant shops under the Novotel.
6. That Facebook and other socials be saturated with the measures in place to combat anti-social behaviour.
