A temporary fence has been erected along the top of the Prince Street seawall between North Cronulla and Elouera beaches for an indefinite period.
A spokeswoman for Sutherland Shire Council said the fence on the lower walkway had been "temporarily installed while council conducts maintenance investigations of the hexagonal concrete structures that protect the embankment of the seawall from coastal erosion".
"The expected timeframe for the fence to remain established is subject to detailed investigations that are currently underway," she said.
"Council seeks to remove the fence as soon as possible, with the prospect of this being achieved prior to Christmas.
"If the fence is required for a longer period of time, council will provide further updates to the community."
The Wall was battered by big seas during four major weather events between July and October this year.
The council has said previously engineers reported no structural damage, but capital works were planned for the precinct during this financial year.
The works would include concreting the sea wall below the normal beach surface level, repairs to the hexagonal blocks and the removal of exposed fragments of the old seawall structure.
