A pocket of unnamed land at Beverly Hills may soon be dedicated to the memory one of the local government area's past community champions.
Georges River Council is proposing to name the 550-square-metre block on the corner of Warwick Street and Gloucester Road, Beverly Hills after former Hurstville Council Citizen of the Year, Meryl Burton.
Mrs Meryl Burton, OAM was a long-term resident of Hurstville and veteran member of many local advocacy groups including Roselands Red Cross, Hurstville Historical Society, Hurstville Community Committee and the NSW Justices' Association.
Mrs Burton was Hurstville Council's first Citizen of the Year and later received a Queen's Birthday honour in 1990 for her service to the community, particularly through the Red Cross Society for more than two decades.
She died in 2004, at the age of 88.
Georges River Council Mayor Kevin Greene said it was fitting for the reserve to build on the area's rich history and commemorate what was important to this community - its people and their good deeds.
"The proposed name of this park will be a constant reminder of a good neighbour we once had and her inspiration for generations to come," Cr Greene said.
The name proposal forms part of a place naming project to increase the use of significant female names and encourage increased equality in recognising local residents' important contributions to the unique history and culture of the local government area.
The proposed name of the reserve is on public exhibition for community feedback via yoursay.georgesriver.nsw.gov.au until February 7.
