Residents of St George and Sutherland Shire and others with close ties to the area are among those named in the 2021 Australia Day Honours List announced today.
Australia's Governor-General David Hurley today announced the Australia Day 2021 Honours List, which recognises 845 Australians.
"On behalf of all Australians, I congratulate everyone recognised in the Australia Day Honours list," Mr Hurley said.
The Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) is the second highest in the four-level awards system and is given "for distinguished service of a high degree to Australia or to humanity at large."
The next highest level is the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service in a particular locality or field of activity, or to a particular group.
The fourth level is the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) and is awarded "for service of particular recognition".
Among those recognised this year are:
- Warwick George Cary ESM (posthumous honour), of Kogarah, Member of the Order of Australia (AM), for significant service to emergency response organisations, and to military history and awards.
- Professor Michael Graham Chapman, Member of the Order of Australia (AM), for significant service to medical education, and to obstetrics and gynaecology.
- Hank Christiaan Laan, of Cronulla, Member of the Order of Australia (AM), for significant service to the building and construction sectors.
- Theodora Ahilas, of Blakehurst, Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), for service to people affected by asbestos-related diseases, and to the law.
- Kenneth George Broughton, of Sutherland, Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), for service to lawn bowls.
- Margaret Burke, of Kirrawee, Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to netball.
- Robert Chizzoniti, of Kogarah Bay, Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), for service to small business operators in the postal industry.
- Colin John Hopkins, of Peakhurst, Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), for service to science education, particularly to physics.
- Ian Mayer, of Caringbah South, Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the community through charitable organisations.
- Professor Tracey Lynn Moroney, of Monterey, Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to medical education, particularly to nursing.
- Glenn Anthony Wheeler, of Caringbah, Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), for service to the broadcast media, and to the community.

This year's honours list recognises 571 awards in the General Division of the Order of Australia, including four appointed Companions of the Order (AC); 37 appointed Officers of the Order (AO); 159 appointed Members of the Order (AM) and 371 Medals (OAM) awarded.
There were 28 recipients of awards in the Military Division of the Order of Australia, including two AO, 11 AM and 15 OAM; 176 meritorious awards and 70 Distinguished and Conspicuous awards.
