Sutherland Shire Council was unable to host its normal program of community events that usually mark Australia Day-with the current increased risk of COVID-19 transmission in NSW and the Public Health Orders in place.
Australia Day is an incredibly significant day for the nation. Many local families and visitors to the region look forward to coming together to share this day at events staged in the Sutherland Shire each year.
Starting early, the North Cronulla Australia Day Nipper Carnival kicked off proceedings for those who got to the beach early and grabbed a highly sought after parking spot.
Several small COVID-Safe community events were staged. At Hazelhurst the traditional Australia Day citizenship ceremony was held, where new citizens who have made Sutherland Shire their home are welcomed.
There was also family entertainment hosted in a COVID-Safe environment at the Sutherland Leisure Centre and roving performers and buskers at various Sutherland Shire locations.
