Raised pedestrian crossing and new roundabout for Cronulla High School area

Sutherland Shire Council has approved the works and released designs.

A council staff report said representations had been received from the community for both measures.

Raised crossing: "The existing [pedestrian] crossing point is approximately 18.6 metres wide, through two median islands and three lanes of traffic," the report said.

"Sight distance on the western side of Elouera Road is unsatisfactory.

"The location is immediately outside the Cronulla High School.

"Apart from this crossing being located outside a high school with increasing enrolments, this crossing point services one of the most heavily utilised shared pathways in Sutherland Shire."

Roundabout: The report said, over the years, the council has received numerous concerns regarding intersection safety and traffic delays at the intersection of Elouera Road and Bate Bay Road.

"It has long been intended to provide a roundabout at this location," the report said.

"It is council's intention to provide the roundabout in conjunction with Stage 2 of the Elouera Road Roads Construction Program Project.

"Council has run the traffic model for the roundabout option for the Elouera Road and Bate Bay Road intersection.

"The traffic modelling shows that the weekday PM peak hour is most critical among the three peak periods considered.

"With the roundabout option the Elouera Road / Bate Bay Road intersection will operate satisfactorily with Level of Service A, with acceptable queuing and delay.

"The PM peak queue on Elouera Road indicates that there will be no adverse impact on the performance of the Captain Cook Drive and Elouera Road Intersection due to the proposed roundabout."

The report said the council engaged with Cronulla High School and Transdev and both were satisfied with the proposed changes.
