Kogarah's Ajay Sharma says that he wasn't healthy in school, but after just one semester in university he decided to start his weight loss journey.
Clocking in at 120kgs at the end of year 12, Ajay took his free time during his first semester break to start going to the gym. He said it was initially just a as a past time but he did notice the positive effects training and exercising was having on his life.
"After about a year and a half of it I was still just training and I had reached about 95-100kgs," he said.
"It was good progress but I knew I could go further. So, in 2019 I started researching and experimenting with different diet plans. I formed a five month plan and was very strict in following it. I ended up losing 22kgs, reaching around 70-75kgs."
Ajay thought he had hit his limit but said he was determined to push past it.
"The thought of bodybuilding and weightlifting was never in my mind until then," he said.
"There was this competition in April, 2020, I was interested in but that was cancelled and I kinda gave up.
"It was difficult to train with COVID as I had to drop training for about 12-14 weeks with gyms being closed, but I did still keep to my diet."
When gyms reopened Ajay set his sights on a competition in November, 2020 and enlisted the help of a trainer at the end of June.
"He said I was ready, and I was both shocked and stoked that I was going for competition," said Ajay.
"My competition preparation included the same meals every day, a vegetarian diet - plenty of tofu, cottage cheeses, yoghurts as well.
"I reached 74kg with about 5.5-6% body fat. I was happy to be there and have the physique that I have obtained."
Ajay, to his surprise, went on to place First in the Men's Juniors and Third in the Novice Men's.
He said that he was over the moon about the results and that he is now looking to his future competitions.
"I have plans to compete for the same federation along with another federation hopefully on a yearly basis, if not twice a year," he said.
"Hopefully I can get a pro card and possibly represent the Australia Federation."
Ajay has received a lot of support from bodybuilding. Despite some hesitation, he posted an image of his transformation and quickly found it to be accepted well.
"I received some great support and it helped motivate me, especially when I saw it made the front page of Reddit," he said.
"Since then I regularly receive messaged asking for tips and advice on the best ways to train and lose weight. I'm looking to get more involved within the bodybuilding community and help others like me."
