Controversial Hughes MP Craig Kelly and his wife Vicki are looking for another property in the electorate after selling their Illawong home at auction.
The five-bedroom, three-bathroom house on an 840 square metre block sold for $1,651,000.
The couple bought the property in 2010 for $997,000 after living in two other locations in Alfords Point and Illawong.
Mr Kelly said the timing of the auction and political issues, which culminated in his resignation from the Liberal Party last week, were coincidental.
He also revealed the reason for moving house was the needs of their son Trent, who has an intellectual disability.
"We wanted a bigger backyard area for Trent, who is 24 going on 25 but has the intellectual capacity of a three or four-year-old," he said.
"We have a relatively small backyard where we are now."
Mr Kelly said they did not have their sights on another property, but had a couple of months to find something, which would be in the Hughes electorate where he intends to stand as an independent at the next election, which is due in 2022.
Mr Kelly said a problem occurred during the sale of the house.
"Someone sneaked in during an open house inspection and hung an Islamic flag in the main bedroom," he said.
"Police are investigating."
