A St George resident who said she came across a large snake while walking her dog in a Rockdale park recently took to Facebook to help identify the reptile.
Steph Collins took to the Rockdale Residents Unite! Facebook page recently to ask: "Does anyone know what kind of snake this is?"
"Just spotted near the wetland area at Barton Park walking my dog," she wrote, along with photos of the snake in question.
Her post drew numerous comments, including from a number of people who sought to identify the snake.
Suggestions ranged from a tree snake, to an olive python, to a golden crowned snake, and even a highly venomous Eastern brown snake.
Others thought it might be a marsh snake.
A Bayside Council spokesman said the council had not been alerted about a snake in the park or been asked for help to identify it.
"Our environmental team are out and about, and were in Barton Park this week, but didn't come across any snakes," he said.
"Over the years there have been a few reports of snake sightings, but we couldn't find any record of a person or animal being bitten.
"It is always good to remind the public to take normal precautions for snakes when moving around in areas that have long grass and/or dense vegetation.
"Our environmental officer has advised if you see a snake don't panic, back away to a safe distance and allow the snake to move away."
