When George Braine, of Heathcote, retired from his job in the printing industry 11 years ago, he found himself at a loose end.
With his wife playing tennis each Tuesday, he decided to give volunteering a go and set about finding a place he could make a difference.
"When I retired I was aware of the Community Centre in Engadine," Mr Braine said.
"They suggested Sutherland Shire Community Transport, as it was then known, was looking for drivers.
"I contacted them, put through the formalities, clearing me to start early 2011."
Activus Transport, formerly Sutherland Shire Community Transport, offers easy, affordable and convenient transport to help the elderly or those with disabilities get out and about.
Most of their drivers are volunteers like Mr Braine, who has been a regular Tuesday driver now for 10 years.
Activus Transport's assistant general manager Stephanie McCamley nominated Mr Braine as this week's nominee for the 2021 Leader Local Cause Champion.
"He's a true gentleman - just ask any of his customers or fellow staff members," Ms McCamley said.
"He keeps himself active by playing golf twice a week and hitting the gym with his regular buddies known as the 'old farts'.
"You'd never know he was an octogenarian!"
Mr Braine, now 82, said becoming a volunteer driver for Activus Transport was "one of the best things I've ever done".
"It has been a pleasure to be a volunteer driver; meeting such a variety of clients, all with different situations in life," he said.
"Their stories are amazing; it is such a joy to listen to them.
"It is important to me to keep active doing what I love to do, hopefully for years to come."
Mr Braine also thanked Activus Transport team members Donna and Martina.
"[They] are so professional in their duties setting out the days for our schedules to be met almost 'hassle free' almost every time."
