Georges River Council is set to explore the idea of building a bocce court at Smith Park in Kingsgrove.
Councillor Vince Badalati raised the idea as a notice of motion at last week's council meeting.
He said a group of residents had approached him about the idea.
"I have been approached by quit a few elderly Italian gentlemen about council providing a bocce court at Smith Park in Kingsgrove," he said.
"Earlier this year a new Italian group started at the Kingsgrove Community Aid Centre.
"It started out as a small group of ten people and it has now grown to over 100 people."
However in the directors comments on the notice of motion it states that the idea was inconsistent with the Community Strategic Plan.
"Extensive consultation was undertaken during the preparation of the Georges River Council Open Space, Recreation and Community Facilities Strategy," the directors comment stated.
"At this time boules, the collective name for a wide range of ball games including bocce and petanque, was not identified as a priority recreational activity.
"There is a bocce court (Boulodrome) located in Anglo Square at Westbourne Park, Carlton.
"The court was constructed by Council in 2005 to specifically accommodate boules. Frequency of use at the Boulodrome located in Anglo Square has remained low since the time of construction."
Cr Badalati said the court would encourage elderly people to maintain an active lifestyle.
"One of the things that they have asked for as exercise is the provision of a bocce court," he said.
"I notice that the director's comments says that it is not consistent with community strategic plan and I am not sure why that is.
"I thought we were trying to encourage elderly people to exercise and the closest court is over at Campsie, so it's a fair way for elderly people to go.
"We are looking at an approximate cost of $15,000.
"This is a one off cost, it's not a large sum in the scheme of things, but I know that it will make quite a lot of people happy and get them out exercising rather than sitting at home."
The council's general manager is expected to present a report on the feasibility of installing a bocce court at Smith Park to the April 2021 council meeting.
