Grab your goggles - Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre is welcoming swimmers once again!
Georges River Council decided to make the best of Covid-19 restrictions and accelerated the planned roof replacement works over the pool area.
The new roof, featuring a wave-line ceiling and new vapour barriers, boasts a life expectancy of another 25 years.
Georges River mayor Kevin Greene said the centre had been a popular venue for many years.
"Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre has been used and loved by the local community for over 25 years, and council is pleased to have taken this opportunity to future-proof it for many more years to come," he said.
"The improved facility complements the current expansion of the Penshurst Park Sporting Hub with both facilities addressing our community's wish for active sport and recreation amenities as detailed in council's adopted Community Strategic Plan (2018-2028).
"Council is committed to providing quality recreation spaces and to continue improving the fantastic sporting facilities we are proud to have here in Georges River."
The aquatics area was also given a full refurbishment with significant works undertaken, ranging from painting, landscaping, re-grouting and tiling, through to brand new signage and pool lane ropes.
Highlights include the greenery planted throughout the facility, and the steam room, which was re-tiled and given a complete revamp.
The community can also enjoy the all-new modular seating around the pool deck, particularly parents and carers who are supervising children.
The renovations saw a pool filtration plant replacement as well, with the new filters better suited to the more than 10,000 swimmers that visit the centre weekly.
The filters enable a more efficient maintenance of water hygiene and a significant reduction of 600 per cent in backwash water consumption.
The installation of the new industry-leading filters is consistent with the council's commitment to innovation and sustainability, following the eight hydropanels council installed in 2018 which offset over 26,000 single-use plastic bottles each year.
BlueFit Group (the centre's operator) chief executive Todd McHardy said he was looking forward the re-opening of the centre.
"With all the facilities open again, we look forward to seeing familiar faces and welcoming new members to our pools, spa, sauna, steam room, café and creche," he said.
Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre's Aquatics Area opening hours are:
- Monday to Friday: 5.30am-9pm
