The Richie Walker Memorial Aquathlon has been organised and run by the Cronulla Triathlon Club and its volunteers for 35 years.
All proceeds from the event are donated to The Heart Foundation and the club is committed to creating an opportunity for athletes of all abilities to compete against one another in a fun, organised and safe environment.
The race was first held in 1987 and is dedicated to the memory of Richie Walker, a promising Cronulla Triathlon Club member who tragically and suddenly passed due to a heart attack during a race.
This year, the Aquathlon also hosted the ITU Youth, Junior, and U23 Aquathlon Championship, the Triathlon NSW Aquathlon Championship and served as a qualifier for the 2021 ITU World Championships.
Nearly 300 competitors lined up for the start at Gunnamatta Bay including those participating in the Sean Maroney First Responders Triple 000 Aquathon Cup- a race inside the main race, and all for a worthy cause.
The $6000 profit generated on the day was donated in Richie's name to The Heart Foundation with Richie's parents, Elizabeth and David and club members presenting a cheque to the Foundation to assist their research into the causes and cures of heart disease.
Over $100,000 has been donated by the club through the Richie Walker Aquathlon event.
