Eastlakes Reserve will be renamed Jack Mundey Reserve to honour the late green space advocate, if a proposal from Bayside Council is successful.
The Geographical Names Board is currently seeking feedback on the proposed name.
Mr Mundey, former secretary of the Builders Labourers Federation which led a green ban push to establish the reserve in Eastlakes in the 1970s, was selected as the namesake by Bayside mayor Joe Awada.
Mr Awada used one of his mayoral minutes in 2020 to honour Mr Mundey.
"Bayside residents have the enjoyment of some of the most beautiful parks and gardens Sydney has to offer," he said at the time.
"One of these parks, the much-loved and utilised Eastlakes Reserve, came about through the tenacity and leadership of the legendary, and recently departed, Jack Mundey.
"I cannot think of a better way to express our gratitude to Jack Mundey and ensure his role in socially responsible development is preserved in our local history.
"It is a fitting tribute to a man who shaped Sydney and gave us the precious green spaces, like Eastlakes Reserve, that we now treasure."
Mr Mundey died last year, aged 90.
He came to prominence in the 1970s through the green ban movements, and his work has helped shape the way we view urban planning today.
Geographical Names Board chair Narelle Underwood said the community was encouraged to comment on the proposal before the Board makes it decision.
"Through place naming, communities have the opportunity to unlock past stories, preserve traditions, reawaken language and provide a sense of belonging and identity," she said.
"We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name."
The proposal can be viewed at the GNB' website (proposals.gnb.nsw.gov.au). Residents can lodge a submission there, or mail one to Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Avenue, Bathurst, NSW, 2795.
The submission period is open until June 13.
