Sutherland Shire Police issue warning after spate of vehicle break-ins

Sutherland Shire Police are warning residents to remove all valuables, and lock and secure their vehicles before leaving them after a spate of break-ins.
The warning comes after 28 reported steal from motor vehicles offences in the space of just 48 hours in the Engadine and Heathcote areas.
Police said that in most cases, the vehicles targeted were left unlocked with wallets, handbags and electronic items in full view.
Police said thieves had also used the victims' credit cards to fraudulently purchase items, adding to their distress.
"If they're not after your car, then you can bet they're after any valuables you've left inside," Sutherland Shire Police Area Command said.
"Thieves are stealing house keys, laptops, cash from consoles, mobile phones, sunglasses, wallets and anything of value.
"This is an opportunistic crime in which you can assist in reducing by remembering a few simple steps, even if parked in your driveway."
Police urged motorists to:
- Remove the ignition keys and lock your car's doors and windows
- Take everything of value from your car each time you leave it
- Avoid parking in dimly lit or isolated areas
- Remove any documents in your car which identify where you live - your home might be the thieves' next target
- Don't hide any spare keys inside or under your car - thieves know just where to look
- Engrave or mark your car's accessories with your licence number.
Police also suggested taking a few simple steps to secure your home, including:
- Fit quality security doors, windows, locks, alarms, lighting and warning signs
- Secure all windows and doors
- Activate your alarm, smoke detectors and security lighting
- Lock your gates, sheds and garages.
- Check your home.
Police urged people to report any suspicious activity to your local police station or the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
