Sutherland Shire Police are again warning residents to lock their vehicles after a spate of break-ins and vehicle thefts in recent weeks.

And police believe the same people are responsible for a spate of thefts across Sydney.

Sutherland Shire Police Local Command said there had been an increase in reports of property stolen from vehicles and stolen vehicles in the past few weeks.

Police said thieves had targeted vehicles in the Como and Oyster Bay areas last night, while vehicles in Illawong, Heathcote and Engadine were the targets of thieves on different nights.

"We believe those responsible are committing these offences across the Sydney area," Sutherland Shire Police Local Command said.

"The majority of cars broken into have been unlocked, and often the vehicles being stolen have had keys left in them.

"Sutherland Shire Police are working hard to identify these offenders and gather the appropriate evidence."

The warning comes a week after Sutherland Shire Police urged vehicle owners to remove all valuables, and lock and secure their vehicles before leaving them.

It came after police said they had received reports of 28 steal from motor vehicles offences in the space of just 48 hours in the Engadine and Heathcote areas.

In most cases, the vehicles targeted were left unlocked with wallets, handbags and electronic items in full view.

Police said thieves had also used the victims' credit cards to fraudulently purchase items, adding to their distress.

"We ask that people lock their vehicles, not leave valuables or keys in the vehicle [and] report suspicious behaviour via the Police Assistance Line on 13 14 44," Sutherland Shire Police said.
