A pocket of unnamed land at Beverly Hills may soon be dedicated to the memory of one of the local government area's past community champions.
The Geographical Names Board is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Georges River Council to name the reserve as 'Meryl Burton Reserve'.
Geographical Names Board chair Narelle Underwood said the board was encouraging community comment before it considers the proposal.
"Through place naming, communities have the opportunity to unlock past stories, preserve traditions, reawaken language and provide a sense of belonging and identity," Mrs Underwood said.
"We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name."
The late Meryl Burton OAM (1916 - 2004) was a long-term resident of Hurstville, who lived in the vicinity of the proposed reserve.
Ms Burton was Hurstville's first Citizen of the Year in 1989 and received a Queen's Birthday honour in 1990.
Throughout her life Burton maintained involvement in several community associations.
Among these were the Roselands Red Cross, the Hurstville Historical Society, the Hurstville Community Committee, and the NSW Justices' Association.
Georges River Council is proposing to name the 550-square-metre block on the corner of Warwick Street and Gloucester Road, to commemorate Ms Burton's community contributions and accomplishments.
Georges River Council mayor Kevin Greene told the Leader earlier this year it was fitting for the reserve to build on the area's rich history and commemorate what was important to this community - its people and their good deeds.
"The proposed name of this park will be a constant reminder of a good neighbour we once had and her inspiration for generations to come," Cr Greene said.
Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website.
Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.
The closing date for submissions is 2 July 2021.
